ICGEB in Buenos Aires, Argentina 1-3 October, 2015

Molecular Mechanisms in Tissue Degeneration and Regeneration, an international meeting on degenerative disorders and hope for new therapies

Ibero America divulga:

Together with the growth in life expectancy over the last two decades, there has been a tremendous increase in the occurrence of degenerative diseases, which are taking an impressive' toll on society in terms of morbidity, mortality and economic burden. These include Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, retinal degeneration and heart failure.

The “Ministero de Ciencia, Tecnología e Inovación Productiva (MINCyT), Republica Argentina” and the ICGEB have jointly organized an international meeting on these topics, to be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina from 1 to 3 October 2015.

The meeting will bring together some of the most prominent scientists in the field from Europe, North America and Latin America to discuss the way in which genes influence the probability of developing degenerative conditions, the mechanisms involved, how these might be prevented and the hope for new therapies. Innovative strategies based on the direct delivery of DNA or the use of stem cells currently offer much hope for dealing with dementia and heart failure, and new drugs and therapeutic strategies are on the horizon.

This meeting falls within the activities organized on the occasion of the Year of Italy in Latin America, an initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Italy. The meeting will be opened by Minister Lino Barañao, MINCyT.

The ICGEB is an international, intergovernmental organization for advanced research and education in the fields of molecular genetics and biotechnology, operating since 1987 within the United Nations common system. The Centre has seats in Trieste (Italy), New Delhi (India) and Cape Town (South Africa) and is currently supported
by 64 Countries. An outstation of the ICGEB is also located in Buenos Aires.
