ICGEB - CHILE International Course on lignocellulosic bioethanol, 12-16 March 2012

This week in Concepción, Chile

The International Course on lignocellulosic bioethanol takes place in Conception, Chile, this week; an event organised by Jaime Rodriguez, Centro de Biotecnologia, Universidad de Concepcion, Chile.

The course focuses on four main topics: wood chemistry and biotechnology; pretreatment; bioethanol and biomaterials, and life cycle and economic analysis of production of second generation bioethanol. Chile's second major source of income is based on forestry and R&D is being carried out to obtain second generation biofuels. The objective here is to help build human capability and infrastructure within the country and the region.

The meeting takes place in a territory with a strong forest-based economy. The need for scientific critical mass in bioethanol production is a key factor in making Chilean forests more competitive in a global climate change scenario.

Speakers include Richard Phillips, Department of Wood and Paper Science, North Carolina State University, USA,Jack Saddler and Richard Chandra of the  Faculty of Forestry, University of British Columbia, CANADA and Andre Ferraz, Faculty of Chemical Engineering, Sao Paolo University, BRAZIL.
