While this year’s Board session came hard on the heels of the change in the Italian Government, Minister Roberto Cantone, Director, Bilateral and Multilateral Scientific and Technological Cooperation Unit, DG for the Promotion of the “Country System”, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, attended the session in a great show of solidarity to the ICGEB.

New members to the ICGEB include the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Republic of Montenegro, while representatives of the additional Observer Countries of Armenia, Ghana and Namibia were also present. The Chair of the Council of Scientific Advisers, attended the session to publically endorse the Scientific Programme of the Centre as recently reviewed by the Council.

Highlights from this year’s Board include the greatly acclaimed launch of the ICGEB Trieste collections on iTunes U – Beyond Campus, an initiative that has effectively doubled the outreach of the Centre’s short-term training capacity since July 2011; ICGEB South Africa - effectively set to double its scientific critical mass over the next five years; ICGEB India - licensing Intellectual Property under the Malaria Vaccine Development Programme, and the agricultural Biosafety activities pursued in sub-Saharan Africa, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The External Auditor, Auditor General of the Republic of South Africa, delivered an extremely positive and encouraging Report to the Board, and has been reconfirmed for the next three years.

The fellowship programme of the Centre has been renamed “The Arturo Falaschi ICGEB Fellowship Programme”, in honor of the memory of Prof. Arturo Falaschi, former Director-General, the mind and driving force in the founding and development of the Centre, as a tangible sign that his legacy be maintained.
