ICGEB at the Biosafety Clearing-House, Convention on Biological Diversity
Shams Yazdani, Group Leader of the Synthetic Biology and Biofuels laboratory, ICGEB New Delhi is attending the Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group AHTEG on Synthetic Biology, of the Biosafety Clearing-House, Convention on Biological Diversity, being held in Montreal, Canada from 21-25 September 2015.
Among the Terms of Reference of the Ad Hoc Expert Group are the exchange views on how to address the relationship between synthetic biology and biological diversity and the identification of differences and similarities between living modified organisms.
The Convention on Biological Diversity is an international treaty to sustain the rich diversity of life on Earth; 195 States and the European Union are party to the Convention.
The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety aims at reducing the potential adverse effects of biotechnology on biodiversity, and the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and its Targets represent the world's commitment to reduce biodiversity loss.
