ICGEB Meetings - Recent Highlights


At the IX Latin American Society for development biology (LADSDB) meeting, held in Medellín, Colombia from 9-13 October, Sir John Gurdon, Nobel Awardee, of the Gurdon Institute UK gave a keynote lecture on "The stability and reversal of cell differentiation. The meeting, organised by Natalia Pabón-Mora, Universidad de Antioquia, Medellín, is an inspiring conference for all those working in any of the pivotal themes in Developmental Biology, offering an exciting opportunity for all developmental biologists in the Americas and around the world to meet and discuss advances, approaches, experiences and emerging questions and methods in the field. Proudly sponsored by ICGEB, 250 participants attended the meeting, 76 talks were held and 110 posters presented.

The 3rd edition of the  International summer school on Prion and Prion-like neurodegenerative disorders was held in Desenzano, Garda, Italy from 24-28 September, organised by Gianluigi Zanusso, University of Verona, Italy, and with the active participation of Emanuele Buratti, ICGEB Trieste. The annual Summer School provides an informal and interactive environment to review and discuss the clinical and molecular highlights on these diseases, including basic cell biology, biochemistry, disease phenotypes and therapeutic strategies. From 17-28 July 2017 the DrosAfrica-ICGEB Workshop on Drosophila Melanogaster, "Drosophila melanogaster in biomedical research: low cost and profitable" was held in Ibadan, Nigeria with the participation of Fabian Feiguin, ICGEB Trieste and co-organised by DrosAfrica, Samuel Babafemi Olaleye and Amos Abolaji, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Impacting a wide range of communities in Africa, DrosAfrica has trained over 50 people from 8 institutions in 5 different African countries. These individuals constitute an important part of the future of research in Africa. Members of African institutions, especially women, are strongly urged to apply. Proudly co-organised by ICGEB.

Consisting in free lectures and research talks and hands-on laboratory training, the meeting also provided an opportunity for interaction with NABDA, Abuja, where Lucy Obgadu, Vice-President of the ICGEB Board of Governors, is Director-General/CEO.
