Prevention of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and respiratory diseases - ICGEB Cape Town

Cape Town, South Africa

"Non Communicable Diseases in Developing Countries". Organized by Luiz Zerbini, ICGEB Cape Town, South Africa, the workshop takes place in Cape Town from 15-19 October 2012.

Prevention of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and respiratory diseases needs to be made a priority or their prevalence will increase in low- and middle-income countries and disproportionately affect the poor. Based on the World Health Organization (WHO) report, NCDs had emerged as one of the twenty-first century’s major development challenges. Non-communicable diseases account for an estimated 55 million deaths annually and over 90 per cent of those deaths occurred in developing countries and among the poorest populations. In Africa alone, deaths are estimated to grow by 20 per cent by 2015.

This course covers five days of basic and molecular aspects in several non-communicable diseases. The aim is to give an overview of the current scenario of important diseases, how to obtain valuable information from them and how to teach this information to others.

International speakers include Jin Rong Zhou, Harvard University, USA, Neil Perkins, Newcastle University, UK, Joan GuinovartInstitute for Research in Biomedicine, Barcelona, Spain and Mauro Giacca, ICGEB Trieste.
