Awareness Workshop in Sri Lanka on ICGEB Funding Schemes

From 6-8 November, 2017 in response to a request from the National Science Foundation of Sri LankaLawrence Banks and Vittorio Venturi held a series of meetings with Sri Lankan scientists about the different ICGEB programmes, including Meetings and Courses, Fellowships and Collaborative Research Proposal Grant applications. The participants received information and advice on how to apply to these different activities and were given an in-depth description of the different selection processes and the criteria that are important for successful applications.

During the visit, the Sri Lankan National Science Foundation and the Ministry for Science and Technology expressed their desire to develop a new research facility: the Sri Lankan Institute for Biotechnology (SLIBTEC). This will be a neighbour of the Sri Lankan Institute of Nanotechnology (SLINTEC) and will focus on research in the life sciences and biotechnology, with an emphasis on the needs of South Asia.

In a meeting with the Minister of Science Technology Hon. Susil Premajayantha, his Secretary Mr. Udaya Senevirathne, and the State Minister of Finance Hon. Eran Wickramaratne, a formal invitation was passed to ICGEB to help towards making this project a reality and supporting SLIBTEC in hosting an ICGEB Regional Research Centre.

A delegation from Sri Lanka will be in attendance at the forthcoming session of the ICGEB Board of Governors to be held in Trieste in May.
