The aim of the 3rd Biotechnology Summit 2016 (BS16) is the exchange of cutting-edge knowledge among researchers, students and professionals, offering an excellent opportunity to establish strong international collaborations.

In this context, the ICGEB is sponsoring a session on "Biotechnology for Developing Countries". The Workshop will see the direct participation of scientists from ICGEB who will outline the ICGEB potential for the international scientific community.

Time for discussion and interaction will follow each lecture, and abstracts will be selected for short oral presentations.

Topics

  • Facilitating access to quality biotherapeutics, through support of local biopharmaceutical manufacturing

  • Human Genes, Bacterial Anticancer Proteins/Peptides, Product of Nature and Patent Eligibility Issues in the United States

  • Novel agro-biotechnological approaches for a more sustainable agriculture

Invited speakers

Marco Baralle (ICGEB Trieste, Italy)

The technology transfer initiative at ICGEB is exploring means to enable member countries access to biotherapeutics, at more affordable prices. One mechanism we are operating is a center which would generates and provides modern high-yield cell lines producing biologicals with the same sequences as originator molecules, as well as appropriate down-stream processes and analytical methods., and to provide these to local biologics manufacturers in developing counties

Ananda Chakrabarty (University of Illinois, Chicago, USA)

Cancer and HIV/AIDS are dreaded diseases worldwide and no satisfactory low cost therapy exists today for these diseases.  My talk will deal with the development of bacterial protein/peptide drugs with broad modes of action so that a single drug will have both anticancer and anti-HIV/AIDS activity.  However, unmodified protein drugs are products of nature and the recent US Supreme Court decisions make the patents on such drugs invalid.  Thus this talk will deal with recent controversies on the patent eligibility of natural phenomena/products of nature issues as decided by the US Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC)

Vittorio Venturi (ICGEB Trieste, Italy)

A very important challenge for the future is to significantly reduce the use of chemical additives (i.e. fertilizers and pesticides) in agriculture. The most promising alternative are microbial inoculants which are agricultural amendments that use beneficial microbes to promote plant health. There is now considerable investment by the private sector in order to generate new products which can at least in part replace chemical additives. This lecture will illustrate and discuss this important growing topic in agricultural biotechnology
