ICGEB SMART Fellowships

Scientific Mobility for Advanced Research Training

Open to nationals of ICGEB Member States, this fellowship provides undergraduates, graduate students and postdoctoral scientists in the early stage of their career the opportunity to spend between 3-12 months at a research institution in an ICGEB Member State other than their own.

The programme promotes mobility between Member States as a way to enhance skill building, acquire specific hands-on training available in the receiving laboratory and increase scientific cooperation in science and technology in ICGEB Member States.

Applicants should work in any area of research with a potential translation benefit for the home laboratory, ranging from basic sciences, human health care, industrial and agricultural biotechnology and environmental bioremediation.

There is no age limit. However, preference is given to young scientists at the beginning of their research career.

Applicants should either have obtained a PhD degree within the last 5 years or be registered for a PhD degree. Young scientists holding at least an MSc or equivalent degree can also be considered.

SMART Fellowships are awarded for mobility of citizens of an ICGEB Member State, enrolled or employed by a research and training institution in an ICGEB Member State to a laboratory in a different ICGEB Member State.

Awards are not intended to prolong visits that have been initiated under other auspices, to support participation in courses, workshops or symposia or as bridging fellowships between, or prior to, long-term stays funded by ICGEB or other organizations.

Awards are for a minimum of 3 to a maximum of 12 months. ICGEB assumes that the fellow will be granted paid leave from his/her institution.

The fellowship covers international economy return travel, health insurance plus subsistence of the fellow only and not of dependents, ranging from 800 to 1,500 USD per month, according to local conditions in the receiving country and the seniority of the applicant. Additionally, a 500 USD monthly bench fee is paid directly to the receiving laboratory.

The fellowship will be paid by bank transfer to the fellow's bank account. Upon joining the receiving laboratory, ICGEB will transfer the bench fee allocation to the receiving laboratory which will be responsible for the management of the amount and reporting the expenditures to ICGEB.

The receiving laboratory is expected to ensure that adequate provisions are in place for the specific research project and makes the bench fee allocation available to the ICGEB SMART Fellow immediately, free of administrative overheads.

There is no deadline for applications, however application is recommended at least 3 months before the proposed starting date.

Applications will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis within one 1 month from receipt.

The ICGEB Fellowships Committee evaluates applications on the basis of scientific merit, assessing the impact of the SMART Fellowship on the fellow's career, the benefits for the applicant's home laboratory and the competence, skills and equipment available in the hosting laboratory. ICGEB will evaluate as positive any additional support provided by the receiving institute for the Fellow's living expenses (i.e. a direct contribution for living expenses, guest house accommodation, etc.).

The application should be completed in English, and consists of two parts:

Part 1: Applicant's personal information and project proposal

Part 2: Acceptance by the receiving institute
