The ICGEB Biosafety Outstation at Ca' Tron was created thanks to the generous financial support of the Fondazione Cassamarca. This has made it possible for the ICGEB to carry out laboratory research on GMO biosafety, in addition to broadening its long-standing training and communication activities in GMO biosafety.Research, Training and Communication
The Outstation focuses on research and training in biosafety issues related to transgenic plants and plant pathogens, and communication in GMO biosafety research. The Outstation is a fully equipped laboratory for studying genetically modified plants and micro-organisms to carry out first class fundamental research that is or will be of importance for biotechnology in the developing world, which is one of the central aims of the ICGEB as a whole. Research focuses on questions of biosafety concerning pathogen-resistant transgenic plants and creating resistant transgenic plants in which the transgenes are designed to minimise any potential epidemiological or environmental risk.
The Outstation hosts the Plant Virology Group, headed by Dr. Mark Tepfer, and the laboratory of the Plant Bacteriology Group, headed by Dr. Vittorio Venturi.
The ICGEB Biosafety Unit at ICGEB-Trieste has long-standing experience in providing theoretical training in the area of GMO biosafety, and this activity is being expanded at Ca' Tron, where dedicated facilities are available. A series of informal seminars is also proposed, which will serve as brainstorming sessions in specific research areas pertinent to GMO biosafety. These are to include questions of immediate concern for GMOs already at, or close to, the commercial release stage.
