The Arturo Falaschi ICGEB Fellowship Programmes

The Arturo Falaschi ICGEB Fellowships programme offers long and short-term fellowships to assist in the training of scientists from Member States through the following actions:

1. Pre-doctoral fellowships and the International PhD programme

ICGEB offers postgraduate studies with the aim of obtaining the “Doctor Philosophiae” (PhD) degree in the life sciences that can be awarded by a number of Academic Institutions of International standing.

ICGEB Trieste is an authorized Affiliated Research Centre of The Open University (UK) to support pre-doctoral research.

An additional awarding body for the PhD studies is the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA), Trieste, Italy, in the context of the recently launched JuMBO PhD Programme, also involving the Universities of Trieste and Udine.

ICGEB also holds Agreements with other Italian and International Universities, including the University of Ferrara, Italy and the  University of Nova Gorica, Slovenia.

The awarding body for research at ICGEB New Delhi is Jawaharlal Nehru University (India) and at ICGEB Cape Town, it is University of Cape Town (South Africa).

The structure of the three-year PhD course includes intensive laboratory research activities, participation in seminars and communication training during Journal Club sessions, symposia and international meetings.

PhD programme commencement dates:

Trieste, ITALY - 1 October
New Delhi, INDIA - 1 August
Cape Town, SOUTH AFRICA - 1 January

Research activities are held in English.

2. Postdoctoral fellowships

Scientists may apply for a postdoctoral fellowship to be carried out at one of the Components. Successful candidates may be eligible for follow-up funding for their research upon their return to the home institute through the Return Grant Programme.

Research activities are held in English and may be undertaken at the ICGEB laboratories located in Trieste and Monterotondo (Italy), New Delhi (India) and Cape Town (South Africa).

3. Flexible fellowships

Short-term fellowships will be awarded only for on-going collaborative research between scientists from ICGEB Member States and the research groups at the ICGEB laboratories in Italy, India and South Africa.

Sandwich PhD fellowships are open to students carrying out a PhD project in their own country that falls within the research fields of an ICGEB Group. Both supervisor and student should negotiate a research project with a suitable ICGEB Group Leader, to provide the basis for the application that must also include a detailed schedule of foreseen activities to be carried out at both the home institute and in the host laboratory.

The Arturo Falaschi ICGEB Fellowships Programme is open to nationals of ICGEB Member States only. Applicants should directly contact the Group Leader of the laboratory whose research field is closer to the personal interest in order to verify and obtain a written confirmation of space availability and eventually define a specific project that will form an integral part of the fellowship application.

Complete applications must be submitted to the ICGEB Liaison Officer of the applicant’s country of origin for endorsement. Endorsement is an essential prerequisite for acceptance of the application. Only endorsed applications will be transmitted to ICGEB for review and final selection.

Endorsed applications must arrive at ICGEB Trieste on or before 30 April, each year.

There is no submission deadline for endorsed application for a Flexible fellowship.
