SUPEROXIDE DISMUTASE EXPRESSION IN PLANTS, B Thomas, H M Davies, J Kridl, C J van Assche & J K O'Neal (1990). Calgene Inc., USA & Roussel Uclaf., France. Patent # WO9001260.
This invention relates to plants, and methods for their preparation, having increased tolerance to environmental and chemical stresses. The method employs transformation of the plants so as to increase the concentration of superoxide dismutase in the plant's cells, especially in the chloroplasts. Plant species having enhanced superoxide dismutase activity as a result of transformation with a DNA expression cassette comprising an E. coli MnSOD gene are provided. Transportation of the expression product of the gene may be targeted to a specific cell organelle, such as the chloroplast.
