ICGEB RESEARCH GRANTS

Funding opportunities are made available through the Collaborative Research Programme (CRP) - ICGEB Research Grants, which is a unique source of funding aimed at financing those projects addressing original scientific questions that show a potential contribution of particular relevance for the applicant's country.

Established in 1988, the programme aims to stimulate collaborative research in Member States facilitating the creation of appropriate research facilities in promising institutes, to promot training of young scientists and develop new research programmes of specific interest to participating countries.

Support is available for research projects in many fields of basic science, human healthcare, industrial and agricultural biotechnology, and environmental bioremediation.

Eligible applicants should hold positions at Universities or Research Institutes in any of the Member States listed in the application form.

Impact of the Collaborative Research Programme

Fig.1: 1998-2006 overall scientific classification of projects awarded a grantSince the Programme's inception in 1988, 317 grants have been awarded for a global financial commitment of over Euro 12.6 million. In 2007, 19 new projects have been awarded to maintain an equitable geographic and temporal distribution of grants.

The evolution of the Programme in recent years, has seen the introduction of substantial changes aimed at widening the funding opportunities available to ICGEB Member States. In particular, three new types of grants have been established in addition to the regular annual Research Grant Programme of the Centre.

The ICGEB-OPS-RELAB CRP Programme, a specific initiative for the Latin American Region jointly implemented together with the Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) and the Red Latinoamericana de Ciencias Biológicas (RELAB), has been launched in 2003. The First Call of this Programme focused on the Molecular Biology of Viral Diseases, particularly on those of relevance to the Latin American Region (HPV, HIV, Dengue, Rotavirus, and Hantavirus among others). 5 projects have been awarded for a total ICGEB-OPS-RELAB contribution of over Euro 225,000 and the relevant research activities have officially started in 2004.

The Programme, structured in three individual and consecutive phases (among which the ICGEB-TWAS-RELAB co-funded coordinating Workshop on Abiotic Stress held on 19-21 June 2006 in Santiago, Chile) led to the launching, in 2006, of a fully-developed call for applications.

5 proposals have been positively evaluated and awarded a grant for a total ICGEB-TWAS contribution of Euro 240,000.00.

The third new funding opportunity is the “Return Grant” which is open to those ICGEB Postdoctoral fellows returning to their home countries within 3 years from the commencement of the fellowship. Launched during the 2004-2005 academic year, it aims at guaranteeing that the knowledge and skills acquired at ICGEB be transferred back to the ICGEB Member States, providing seed money to young scientists and widening the ICGEB network of international collaborations.

CRP applications received 1988-2007The Centre's policy has continued to consistently balance basic and applied research with a sound geographical distribution of awards, as can be seen from the statistics provided. The Programme's evolution during the last few years, has seen the introduction of substantial changes aimed at widening the funding opportunities available to ICGEB Member States. In particular, new types of grants have been established, as detailed below:
